July 11th

The New Forest U15 District Cricket side continued their promising season with 2 friendly wins against Winchester and New Milton U17s. The recent match against Winchester was played at Wellow and Plaitford CC, with captain Adam Drodge losing the toss and the away side elected to bat. Some opening tight bowling from Will Moore 8 overs 3 maidens 1 for 11 ably supported by Charlie Cook, 8 overs 1 for 33 soon had Winchester on the back foot. First change bowlers James Holgate 4 overs 2 maidens 1 for 11 and Alfie Hussey 4 overs 2 maidens 1 for 13 continued to keep the pressure on Winchester as they struggled to find quick runs. Second change bowlers Aidan Batten 5 overs 3 for 26 and Rob Thomas 7 overs 2 for 42 restricted Winchester to 166 for 9 from their 40 overs. In contrast Adam Drodge and Luke Evans started brightly for the Forest scoring 52 in 10 overs before the first wicket fell. When Adam Drodge was dismissed when the score was on 69, Winchester were threatening a comeback, but an excellent 99 run partnership between Toby Edwards and Charlie Field saw the home side to a comfortable 7 wicket victory.

New Milton U17s provided the next opposition for The Forest, with Toby Edwards and Alfie Hussey both playing for their home club against their District colleagues! New Milton batted first with an explosive start. Edwards (53), Case (69) and Day (31) pushed the score along to 185 for 3 from just 25 overs and the home side were expecting a 300 plus score. However a major collapse then followed with the next 7 wickets falling for just 19 runs as New Milton finished 204 all out.

The New Forest batsmen then took control of the game with opener Charlie Field scoring 51, Josh Kennedy 44, leaving Matt Taylor 35 not out and Zac Millar 27 not out to lead the Forest home by a comfortable 5 wickets.

Hampshire District Cricket Festival Review June 2011

New Forest U15 District Cricket team finished in second place following the first round of exciting matches at Lord Wandsworth College. Currently Winchester lead the table with 43 points, New Forest second with 29 points, North Hants third with 28 points and South East Hants fourth with 18 points after the first 3 days.

On the opening  day New Forest were scheduled to play South East Hants, but the match was abandoned due to rain.

On the second day New Forest were the hosts against North Hants. Captain Adam Drodge won the toss and elected to bowl on a damp wicket. His decision looked to be a good one as opening bowler Will Moore (10 overs 2 for 47) soon had the visitors in trouble. Kieran Chalmers (8 overs 0 for 17) made a welcome return to the Forest side and was easily the most economical bowler of the day and unlucky not to take a wicket. Two excellent spells from Alfie Hussey (10 overs 3 for 43) and Josh Kennedy (8 overs 3 for 40), well backed up by Charlie Cook (9 overs 0 for 27) and Aidan Batten (5 overs 1 for 29) kept North Hants under pressure throughout their innings who finished on 207 for 9 from their 50 overs. The New Forest reply saw a spectacular show of batting from James Sampson who scored a very impressive 116 before he was run out. A quick 20 runs from Alfie Hussey then left Josh Kennedy and Kieran Chalmers at the crease to steer The Forest to 208 for 6 and a good win by 4 wickets.

Day 3 saw The Forest take on Winchester. Adam Drodge won the toss again and decided to bat first. Again it looked to be a good decision as Adam Drodge (25) and James Sampson (52) put on a quick 70 runs from the first 11 overs. The positive start continued with Sampson and Field (18) taking the total to 125 for 1 from 25 overs. At this point The Forest were looking to build a total in excess of 250, but an unexpected batting collapse resuted in them being bowled out for just 170 runs as Josh Scott (16 not out) ran out of partners. The New Forest seam attack then worked hard to put Winchester under pressure. Will Moore 7 overs 1 for 34, Alfie Hussey 5 overs 1 for 32, Rob Thomas 4 overs 1 for 24 and Josh Kennedy 5 overs 0 for 15 gave the Forest U15s a fighting chance. Spin bowlers Aidan Batten 10 overs 3 for 31 and Charlie Field 4 overs 1 for 15 then set the game up for a grandstand finish as Winchester were reduced to 162 for 9. The last pair unfortunately knocked off the last eight runs and Winchester won a tense game by 1 wicket.

The second half of the festival takes place at New Milton from Sunday 31st July to Tuesday 2nd August.

Pre-season reports

HOLGATE REWRITES THE RECORD BOOK AS NEW FOREST U 15s CRUSH SOUTH WILTS
A fantastic 5 wicket haul for James Holgate including a record breaking spell of 4 wickets in 4 balls proved too much for South Wilts last Sunday as The New Forest U15s won by 10 wickets.

Captain Adam Drodge elected to bowl on a damp afternoon which proved to be an excellent decision as the two opening bowlers Will Moore 5 overs 1 for 12 and Luke Evans 4 overs 1 for 13 soon had the home side in trouble. First change bowlers Alfie Hussey 6 overs 0 for 7 and Rob Thomas 5 overs 1 for 21 kept up the pressure on South Wilts as they found runs hard to come by. Then enter match winner James Holgate who took 4 wickets in 4 balls, with a man of the match performance and ended with figures of 6 overs 5 for 18. Aidan Batten finished the home side off with 6 overs 2 for 14.

The New Forest openers Adam Drodge (41 not out) and Luke Evans (50 not out) quickly knocked off the 94 runs required to win as The Forest won by an excellent 10 wickets

NEW FOREST U15s FALL JUST SHORT IN GUERNSEY AFTER 109 RUN PARTNERSHIP FROM SAMPSON AND FIELD
The New Forest U15s suprisingly lost 2 matches on their May Bank Holiday tour to the Channel Islands after they hand beaten both the hosts convincingly last year.

In the first game against Guernsey the home side posted a very impressive 281 for 6 after their 45 overs. Charlie Field was the pick of the New Forest bowlers with 9 overs 2 for 27. Luke Evans also bowled well with figures of 7 overs 2 for 56 and the other wicket takers were Harry Field 8 overs 1 for 33 and James Holgate 8 overs 1 for 52.
In reply Adam Drodge (24) and Luke Evans (24) made a positive start, before falling to Guernseys seam attack. Charlie Field (62) and James Sampson (62) shared an electric 3rd wicket partnership of 109 which put The Forest right back into the game. At 243 for 5 at the end of the 39th over with Josh Kennedy (20) and Bennedict Cole (12) at the crease it looked as though The Forest were heading for victory. But a tail end collapse meant the tourists only reached 250 and Guernsey ran out winners by 31 runs.
A much improved bowling display against Jersey the following day saw the home side dismissed for 142. Josh Kennedy was the pick of The Forest bowlers, 7 overs 3 for 20 ably supported by Tom Loseby 4 overs 2 for 7 and Harry Field 7 overs 2 for 24.  In reply Adam Drodge (11) and James Sampson (26) moved the tourists on quickly and at 50 for 2 in the 9th over The Forest U15 side were looking good, but a batting collapse against an excellent spell of spin bowling by Jersey saw The Forest bowled out for just 86, losing the match to Jersey by 56 runs.

5 WICKETS FOR DEBUTANT THOMAS AS THE FOREST U15s CRUSH WEST BERKS
A fantastic 5 wicket haul for Forest newcomer Robert Thomas saw The New Forest U15s comprehensively beat West Berks at New Milton. Adam Drodge won the toss and elected to bowl which proved to be a very good decision from the Forest captain. In his opening spell Robert Thomas tore into the West Berks top order removing both openers. Tight bowling from Alfie Hussey and James Holgate put the visitors under further pressure, before Toby Edwards, 7 overs 4 for 19 and Robert Thomas 6 overs 5 for 39 reduced West Berks to 96 all out. Adam Drodge (28) and Zac Millar (20) put The Forest in a good opening position before James Sampson 27 not out and Charlie Field 11 not out saw the home side win by 8 wickets.

New Forest U15's v Wellow U17's
Wellow U17s beat New Forest U15s by 7 wickets at Minstead. On a slow, low bouncing wicket Wellow U17s won the toss and put the Forest into bat. A good start from Adam Drodge (21) and Toby Edwards (26) was built on by Charlie Field (46) and Luke Evans (51). When the final wicket fell in the 45th over The New Forest U15 District Side had built a reasonable total of 207 all out. Best bowling figures came from Charlie Wood 9 overs 3 for 35 and Tom Beresford 5 overs 2 for 30. Wellow U17s then replied with a flourishing opening partnership between Tom Beresford (61) and Tom Arnold (61) before an excellent 59 not out from Nick Elliot proved to be too much for The Forest as Wellow won by 7 wickets.

New Forest U15's v New Forest U16's

An outstanding 100 not out from Toby Edwards and a magnificent 5 wicket haul from Will Moore saw The New Forest U15s unexpectedly beat The New Forest U16s by 5 wickets last Monday.
On a glorious sunny day at Cadnam New Forest U16s batted first, but were soon in trouble following an explosive spell by Will Moore who quickly took the wickets of Ed Moore, Rob Newman and Kieran Moores. Tom Beresford (37) and RJ Daley (20) secured a useful fifth wicket partnership before Bennedict Cole 8 overs 2 maidens 1 for 14 and Aidan Batten 6 overs 1 maiden 1 for 21 put The U15s back in charge. Will Moore then finished off the tail with an excellent spell with 7.5 overs 1 maiden 5 for 15.
At the start of The New Forest U15 innings Dan Rydes bowled an explosive spell taking 2 early wickets. Then Toby Edwards came to the crease scoring a majestic 100 not out with 16 fours and 2 sixes ably assisted by James Sampson and Josh Scott. Fittingly Toby Edwards hit the winning runs with a six as The New Forest U 15s beat The U16s by 5 wickets.

Devon Tour - April 2011

The New Forest District Cricket U15 side travelled to Devon last week for their 2 opening matches of the season. In the first match South Devon put The Forest into bat on a dreary Devon morning. The Forest were clearly suffering from some winter rustiness as they were bowled out cheaply for 111, with only Josh Kennedy (20) and James Sampson (10) reaching double figures. However the home side found it equally difficult to bat on a wicket with low bounce as Will Moore produced an excellent opening spell of 6 overs 3 maidens 2 wickets for 15. Bennedict Cole then produced an impressive bowling display of 5 overs 1 maiden 1 wicket for 10. Charlie Field 3 overs 2 wickets for 13 and Toby Edwards 4 overs 1 wicket for 14 looked to have South Devon in trouble, but their tail end held firm and the home side won by 3 wickets.

The second day of this short Devon tour proved to be much more productive as clearly The Forest learnt their lessons from the previous day. It was South Devons turn to bat as New Forest won the toss on a murky Devon morning. The bowlers were soon on top with impressive figures from James Holgate 5 overs 2 maidens 3 wickets for 6 runs, Bennedict Cole 5 overs 3 wickets for 9 runs, Luke Evans 8.1 overs 2 wickets for 26 runs, Tom Loseby 2 overs 1 wicket for 14 runs and Toby Edwards 2 overs 1 wicket for 7 runs, with the home side being dismissed for 107. In reply The Forest produced a solid opening partnership of 68 between Zac Millar and Charlie Field, before James Sampson and Toby Edwards smashed the winning 40 runs in quick time to leave The Forest victors by 8 wickets and the 2 game match drawn 1-1.
