Five Wicket Field Sinks Forest U13s
A five wicket haul by Harry Field was too much for The New Forest U13s as they lost by 41 runs in a twenty twenty match against New Forest U14s last Wednesday. Under 14 District captain Adam Drodge won the toss at a windy Minstead and elected to bat. After both himself and Toby Edwards were dropped in the first over, they went on to score a lightening 81 for the first wicket with Adam finishing on 33 and Toby 54. The fast run rate continued with Zac Millar scoring 31 and Richard Bolton 12. Aidan Batten 29 not out and Charlie Field 33 not out gave The U14s a grandstand finish with a terrific total of 218 from their 20 overs. New Forest U13s started their reply very positively with Luke Evans who retired on 58 and passed 1000 runs for the season. Then Harry Field took centre stage taking 5 wickets in 4 overs for 14 runs which effectively ended The New Forest U13 reply. After their twenty overs they finished on 177 giving the U14s a comfortable winning margin.

All Round Team Effort elevates Forest into second place.
A good all round team performance resulted in a comprehensive win for The Forest U14 side against North Hants U14s last Sunday at Lord Wandsworth College. Adam Drodge won the toss yet again and elected to bat. The opening pair of Adam and Zac Millar soon put on a 50 partnership before Zac was caught when the score had reached 56. Adam Drodge played very competently  to make his fifty before being caught on 52. Toby Edwards then made a fluent 49 and Charlie Field a solid 41 before both were out trying to keep the run rate up. Finlay Martin made 10 on his debut, Luke Evans a useful 14 and Aidan Batten a very quick 20 to leave the away side on 229 for 7 at the end of the 45 overs. The New Forest bowlers were soon in the wickets as opening seamers Will Moore 8 overs 1 for 29 and Joshua Mead 9 overs 1 for 29 ripped into The North Hants top order. The bowling performance of the day though was by Julian Drake who from only 5.5 overs took 4 for 28. Luke Evans 4 overs 1 for 28, Aidan Batten 6 overs 1 for 21 and Joe Breddy 6 overs 1 for 15 all bowled well to restrict The North Hants attack. One good run out by Charlie Field saw the end of The North Hants innings as they were dismissed for 181 giving The Forest a comfortable victory which lifts them into second place in the inter district table.

ELECTRIC EVANS FIRES FOREST U14s TO A BIG WIN
An electrifying 90 by Luke Evans fired The New Forest U14s to a 49 run win over Winchester District on Sunday. Captain Adam Drodge won the toss and elected to bat on a gusty afternoon at New Milton. He cracked a quick 30 to give the home side a strong start. His opening partner Josh Scott also played some stylish off side drives in his 30 as the Forest kept the score board moving. Then the performance of the match from Luke Evans. Making only his second start for the U14s he tore into the Winchester attack with an exquisite batting performance producing many memorable shots in his 90. He waspartnered at the crease by Julian Drake who was unfortunate not to make his fifty, as he produced a very accomplished performance for 47. Aiden Batten then hit a rapid 24 as the home side reached a very impressive 262 for 8 from 45 overs. After tea Forests 2 leading bowlers Alfie Hussey 9 overs 1 for 35 and Charlie Cook 8 overs 2 for 25, gave the Forest a great start as Winchester failed to keep up with the run rate. Good bowling figures were also recorded by Josh Kennedy 8 overs 1 for 36, Aidan Batten 7 overs 1 for 43, Julian Drake 6 overs 1 for 34 and Richard Bolton 7 overs 0 for 25. Winchester never really looked like they would reach the target and finished on 213 for 6 from their 45 overs giving the Forest a 49 run victory. The win puts The New Forest at the top of the inter district table with one fixture to go.

BIG WIN FOR NEW FOREST PUTS THEM BACK IN THE TITLE RACE
New Forest 196 for 9 beat South East Hants 117 all out by 79 runs. The New Forest District Cricket U14 side returned to winning ways on Sunday with an emphatic victory over South East Hants in the U14 Hampshire District competition.  On yet another glorious afternoon by the shimmering Solent in Southsea captain Adam Drodge won the toss and elected to bat. Adam then proceeded to score a quick fire 27 before being bowled. The Forest then suffered a mini collapse and the afternoon was looking difficult at 34 for 3 but a very significant partnership of 81 between Zac Millar (30) and Josh Kennedy (44) rescued the game for the Forest. A dazzling 37 from Richard Bolton including one huge 6 and useful runs from Aidan Batten, Charlie Cook and Julian Drake saw the total reach a respectable 196 from 45 overs. Charlie Cook then opened the bowling with a devastating spell of 6 overs 3 for 12. Another excellent 3 wicket haul from Alfie Hussey 6 overs 3 for 43 was well supported by Julian Drake 6 overs one for 32. Joshua Mead 1 over 2 for 5 and Aiden Batten 1 over 1 for 4 then mopped up the tail. Richard Bolton also bowled very tightly with 6 overs 0 for 22. Overall a great team performance which puts the Forest back in contention for the inter district title.

CAPTAIN MARVEL FAILS TO SAVE A GALLANT NEW FOREST
(NEW FOREST U14 219 FOR 5 WERE BEATEN BY SOUTH EAST HAMPSHIRE U14 220 FOR 7)

An exciting match at Spring Gardens Totton saw the South East narrowly beat The Forest in an enthralling game last Sunday. On a glorious afternoon Adam Drodge The New Forest captain won the toss and elected to bat. It proved to be an excellent decision as Adam powered his way to a magnificent man of the match total of 88. Ably supported by Zac Millar with a very competent 41, the opening pair gave the home side an excellent start. The flambouyant Toby Edwards went in at no3 to up the run rate and he quickly raced to 20 before being caught at point. Charlie Field then knocked a stylish 29 and with Richard Bolton scoring 15 and Josh Kennedy 11 not out at the end.

The Forests total of 219 from 45 overs looked a good one! The South East raced off to a quick start with an excellent display of strokes from Simon Collins Wells, but wickets from the the "in form" Alfie Hussey 7 overs 2 for 18, Julian Drake 8 overs 1 for 49 and Charlie Cook 9 overs 1 for 38 put the game back into the balance. Josh Kennedy then produced an explosive spell of 5 overs 2 for 17 which at one point had the visitors reeling but a strong rear guard action from the South East steered the visitors home with 3 wickets remaining. An eagerly awaited rematch takes place in Portsmouth next Sunday.

30th May

Some outstanding batting by Collier 86 and Askall 62 saw West Sussex win by 79 runs on Sunday against The New Forest U14 side.

The match srarted well for The Forest with Charlie Cook, Joshua Mead, Toby Edwards and debutant Richard Bolton all taking early wickets which reduced the visitors to 50 for 4 at the first drinks break.

However a terrific match winning partnership of 127 from Collier and Askall took West Sussex to a commendable total of 220 after 40 overs.

The Forest reply started unfortunately, after openers Adam Drodge and Zac Millar both fell to very good slip catches. Toby Edwards then pulled the game back into Forests favour with some flambouyant strokes and at the drinks interval at 78 for 2 from just 13 overs, Tobys partnership with Charlie Field was looking promising. However soon after Toby Edwards was out for 57 and our momentum was lost. Richard Bolton hit a huge six and Aidan Batten was left 19 not out at the end but ultimately the Forest fell well short at 141 all out.

25th May

On a glorious almost Carribbean afternoon a confident New Forest Under 14 Squad, following six wins from 7 matches travelled to sunny Fair Oak (not quite Bridgetown) to play a Winchester District side, who had been beaten by South East Hants the previos week.

With a very strong New Forest pace attack including Charlie Cook, Julian Drake, Will Moore, Alfie Hussey and Kieran Chalmers there was high expectancy of early wickets. However some inconsistent bowling and too many wides, meant we had to wait until the 11th over for our first wicket from Will Moore. Then a series of dropped catches and some big hitting from Winchesters middle order put the home side in a commanding position at 136 for two after 24 overs.

At this point The New Forest looked like they would have a long afternoon in the field, with the batsmen having to chase a total well in excess of 200. However, a spirited fightback by the Forest bowlers swung the balance of the game back in our favour as Winchester were skittled out for 166, after just 36 overs.

Great bowling figures by Alfie Hussey 8 overs 3  for 21, Will Moore 7 overs 3 for 31, and Charlie Cook 8 overs 2 for 34 were well supported by Julian Drake 6 overs 1 for 28, Aidan Batten 3 overs 1 for 25 and Kieran Chalmers 4 overs 0 for 24. The dropped catches earlier in the game and 31 extras were however to prove vital turning points in the game.

During the tea interval The Forest boys were confident of chasing down 166 from 40 overs and captain Adam Drodge and his opening partner Zac Millar started the innings well and looked in little danger at the first drinks interval.

Then 4 quick wickets gave Winchester the upper hand. Zac Millar was the first to go on 12 being trapped LBW, then Adam Drodge conscious that The Forest were falling behind the run rate tried to drive a straight ball and was bowled for 44. Toby Edwards was then run out for 1 and Josh Kennedy departed soon after following a good delivery from the Winchester spin attack.

As the game wore on The Forest were still behind the run rate, but with 10 overs left and sixty required the win still looked on the cards. Josh Scott was then out for 30 as we began to chase the game and Aidan Batten followed next ball as he tried to clear mid wicket. Charlie Field was also out for 30 trying to play a big shot over the bowlers head and these quick wickets effectively clinched the game for Winchester.

Overall it was a game The Forest should not have lost. But dropped catches, 31 extras and not pacing our reply correctly cost us the game. Hopefully everyone has learnt from these mistakes. The inter district title is still in our hands if we win our remaining four matches. We have the capability, as we have done so many times already this season we just need to prove it!

A comprehensive 3 wicket win on Sunday:

The New Forest U14 District cricket team beat West Berks U15s for the second time this season. On a gloomy, damp afternoon Adam Drodge won an important toss and put the away side into bat.

A devastating opening spell by Julian Drake and Will Moore gave the "Forest" an early breakthrough, as the visitors were reduced to 6 for 2 after just 5 overs.

First change pace bowlers Alfie Hussey and Kieran Chalmers continued their good form of recent weeks and West Berks were in a difficult position at 51 for 4. Their middle order then steadied the visitors innings before Toby Edwards made an outstanding catch at first slip off the bowling of Will Moore to break the partnership. Aidan Batten with his best bowling figures of the season 6 overs 2 maidens 2 for eight comfortably mopped up the tail to leave the away side on just 130.

Remarkably the sun came out for the start of the Forest innings, but unfortunately the home side lost 2 early wickets. Zac Millar began the Forest fightback with a classy knock of 24, but at 51 for 4 The Forest still had a lot to do.

An entertaining partnership of 59 between Charlie Field and Toby Edwards put the home side back in control of the match before Toby was caught for 31 with the score on 111 for 6.

Despite West Berks bringing their opening bowlers back to try and rescue the match, Charlie Field comfortably helped the Forest to a 3 wicket victory with a match winning 48 not out. The victory gave The Forest an excellent sixth win in seven matches so far this season.

Inter-District Campaign, 2010

An exciting 3 wicket win over North Hants yesterday gave the New Forest a winning start to their Hampshire inter district campaign. North Hants U14 130 all out were beaten by The New Forest 134 for 7. The Forest won the toss and on a gloomy afternoon put the visitors into bat. A fiery opening spell from Charlie Cook and Will Moore reduced the visitors to 39 for 4 at the drinks interval. An equally impressive bowling performance from Kieran Chalmers and Alfie Hussey saw North Hants  in real trouble at 55 for 7 before a revival from the their tail order gave them a defendable total of 130 all out. The final bowling figures were Charlie Cook 9 overs 3 maidens 2 for 23, Will Moore 9 overs 1 maiden 2 for 35, Alfie Hussey 7 overs 0 maidens 4 for 20, Kieran Chalmers 7 overs 0 maidens 1 for 20, Josh Kennedy 3 overs 0 maidens 1 for 18 and James Sampson 2 overs 0 maidens 0 for 14. In reply The New Forest made a solid start with Adam Drodge and Zac Millar moving the total along to 35 before Zac was trapped lbw. The best partnership of the match (45 runs) between Adam Drodge and Charlie Field put the home side in what seemed a very comfortable position of 80 for 1. Adam looked like he was going to make his fifty before being given out lbw for 47. A mini collapse then followed with 5 further wickets being lost for just 25 runs and at 105 for 7 the home side were looking rattled. But a match winning 24 not out from Josh Kennedy and Kieran Chalmers 4 not out saw the Forest home to an impressive victory. That gives us a fantastic 5 wins from 6 matches so far this season.

7th May

A much improved bowling performance saw us beat East Devon convincingly by 8 wickets yesterday at Whimple CC. After the disappointment of Saturdays match against South Devon being rained off, our bowlers started the match with all guns blazing as our opponents lost their first 6 wickets for just 23 runs. Charlie Cook had a great opening spell with figures of 5-2-9-3 which was supported by Will Moore with an equally impressive spell of 5-0-12-1. Our catching was first class with Toby Alfie Will Zac and Charlie all holding their chances. Further good bowling spells were then recorded by Alfie Hussey 5-0-18-1, Joe Breddy 5-1-14-1 and Julian Drake 2.2-0-13-2

East Devon were all out for just 78 and the New Forest batsmen quickly knocked off the total on a difficult pitch. Adam and Zac put on a good opening partnership of 52 runs before Zac was caught.Adam and Charlie steered us home with Adam making a terrific 58 not out.

Overall we have had a great pre season, beating West Berks, West Surrey and East Devon as well as New Forest U13s and only the one loss to New Forest U15s.

The serious stuff starts next week with our first inter district match versus North Hants. If we play to our full potential then there is nothing to stop us doing very well in the competition.

In closing this latest report, thanks to all the parents over the weekend; the logistics and communication became a little difficult as our mini tour was disrupted by the rain.

We have all built up a good spirit and momentum. Lets keep it going!
